Ashab e Kahf Synopsis:

The story of the Companions of the Cave is mentioned in Quran 18: 9-26. The exact number of sleep has not been established. The Qur’an also notes that shortly after the accident appeared, people began to “carelessly guess” how many people were in the cave. The Qur’an says: “My helper knows how many there were.” Similarly, regarding the exact time that people stayed in the cave, after making sure that people assumed that they “stayed in the cave 300 years and added nine,” the Qur’an states that “God knows how long they stayed there.”

Several sites are attributed to the “Cave of the Dormouse”, but it has not been archaeologically proven to be the actual site. Ever since the first versions of the myth spread from Ephesus, they have been associated with early Christian catacombs, which attracted large numbers of pilgrims.

On the slopes of Mount Pune (Mount Gulian) near Ephesus (near present-day Selcuk in Turkey), the Cave of the Dormouse was excavated along with the ruins of the religious site built over it in 1926-1928. Excavations have uncovered several hundred tombs from the fifth and sixth centuries. Inscriptions dedicated to the Seven Sleeping Ones were found on the walls and in the tombs. This cave is still offered to tourists.

Other potential sites of Zoghba Cave are in Afshin and Tarsus, Turkey. Afshin is located near the ancient Roman city of Arabisos, which was visited by the Eastern Roman Emperor Justinian. The emperor brought marble niches as gifts from western Turkey to the site, which are preserved in the Eshab-ı Kehf Kulliye Mosque to this day. The site was a Hittite temple that was used as a Roman temple and later a church in Roman and Byzantine times. The Seljuks continued to use the church as a church and mosque. Over time, as the locals converted to Islam, it was converted into a mosque.
